Your Next Customer Might Find You Before They Find Your Door

A friend recommends somewhere for dinner. Before booking, you open Instagram. What does the food look like? What's the atmosphere? Is it somewhere you'd feel comfortable? For many customers, that first visit now happens on a phone, before it happens through your door.

That's why social media and business go hand in hand. A good business still needs good service, a good product and a genuine welcome. Being visible online gives people a chance to notice those things in the first place.

The figures give this some context. Zonal and CGA's April 2022 GO Technology report, based on a survey of 5,000 British consumers in February 2022, found that 48% used social media to find recommendations for places to eat and drink. Among 18–24-year-olds, that rose to 69%. It's an older snapshot, not a measurement of today's habits, but it shows why an online presence matters beyond simply collecting followers.

Instagram is part of that picture — not the whole picture. Research commissioned by Barclaycard Payments and released in June 2023, polling 2,000 adults, reported Instagram at 41% and Facebook at 43% among platforms used to research restaurants before booking. Those findings don't establish Instagram as everyone's first choice. They do show that people look at social profiles while deciding where to spend their time and money.

For an independent business, visibility doesn't have to mean posting constantly or copying every trend. It means making the basics easy: where you are, what you offer, when you're open, and how someone can book or contact you. Then show the details that a directory listing can't — the people, the atmosphere, the care behind what you do.

Short-form video can make that introduction feel personal. A few seconds of a chef preparing a dish, a welcoming room or an owner talking about their business gives someone a clearer picture than a logo alone. It can turn an unfamiliar name into a place they recognise.

Keep your website, social profiles and Google business details working together. Instagram might spark interest; your website might answer a question; a recommendation or review might provide reassurance. Customers don't all take the same path, so don't make your business depend on one platform.

The useful question isn't just, 'How many likes did we get?' It's, 'Could a stranger understand why they should choose us?' Look at enquiries, booking-link clicks and what customers say brought them in, alongside views and engagement. Visibility creates an opportunity; it isn't a promise of customers from every post.
